Varese

Varese is the "Garden City", rich as it is in parks and gardens. A very interesting city to be discovered, despite its small size. Here there is what the French writer Stendhal called the "Versailles of Milan", that is Palazzo Estense: lavish rooms full of frescoes characterize it, but its strong point is the sumptuous gardens, among the most beautiful in Italy. The city of Varese is full of Art Nouveau villas built at the behest of nobles and wealthy people, one above all the Borromeo family. Do not miss the Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza, known for its collection of contemporary and environmental works of art skilfully combined with precious 16th-19th century furnishings. Just outside the city is the religious complex of Sacro Monte, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2003 and an important pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages, consisting of fourteen chapels, and today also the seat of the Lodovico Pogliaghi House-Museum, designed by the same eclectic artist and synthesis of many Italian architectural styles. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is located a few kilometers from the center at the castle of Masnago, with works by Francesco Hayez, Giuseppe Bertini, Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and many others.
