Salerno

Salerno is the town where every year, during the Christmas period, thousands of tourists converge to take part in one of the most beautiful events in southern Italy: the Luci d'Artista (a beautiful show of Christmas decorations and lights). This splendid town, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and protected by the Apennines, a stone's throw from the Amalfi coast, is a small treasure trove of history, waiting to be discovered; just think that the first medical institution in Europe was born in Salerno, at the beginning of the Middle Ages. The Arechi Castle, an ancient medieval stone fortress, located at the highest point of the city, is the ideal place from which to begin your tour of the city. Going down towards the historic city center it is possible to observe Lungomare Trieste, a wide tree-lined garden that runs along the Gulf of Salerno and connects the port to the historic center. After stopping and having lunch in one of the traditional restaurants of the city, your tour continues with a visit to the historic center. The Cathedral of San Matteo, in the Duomo district, is one of the attractions in which different styles converge: here the Arab-Norman architecture coexists in full harmony and blends well with the Baroque style. The Medieval Aqueduct, the Regional Art Gallery, and the Garden of Minerva are wonderful places that deserve to be visited.
